THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
March 9, 2005 - Vol 8, No 10
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott

It's been a wild week for Doctor Who TV news, but before we begin:
The American Who show http://www.americanwho.net is ending. Host
Joey Reynolds announced Tuesday in various forums:
"I regret to inform you that, after the April broadcast of `American
Who', that the programme will end its run. I'd like to thank those
individuals who have helped out in the past. There are some things
that I need to prioritize immediately."
American Who has been a fun, amusing radio show these past 2 years.
I think we should all applaud Joey for bringing us all these new and
classic interviews with so many people involved in the past and
present of the Doctor Who series. It has been a unique feature that
has enhanced Doctor Who fandom. Thanks for all the memories.
Hours after last week's edition came out, Canadian fans spotted
Doctor Who on the CBC TV schedules http://www.cbc.ca/television
Tuesdays at 8PM starting April 5, which meant that we had a
confirmed premiere date for Canada before we had one for the UK.
Friday saw news that BBC Two plans a Doctor Who night for later this
month (now known for 19 March) which will feature an encore of the
2003 documentary "The Story Of Doctor Who" (7:30PM), trivia
special "Some Things You Need To Know About Doctor Who" (8:30PM),
and the previously announced special edition of quiz show Mastermind
(8:40PM). The 1965 Peter Cushing film "Dr. Who And The Daleks" will
air earlier that day at 3:50PM.
Monday saw the UK premiere date and time of Saturday 26 March 7PM
confirmed by Radio 4 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 programme "Front
Row". A change in the narrator for "Project: Who?" on Radio 2
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 was announced - Anthony Stewart Head
(Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Taster's Choice commercials, Little
Britain) is replacing Patrick Stewart.
Tuesday 8 March was the start of the big press for the series. BBC
Radio Five Live http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive and Chris Moyles'
breakfast show on Radio 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 premiered the
new theme tune in the morning. The Doctor Who website "regenerated" -
the new series is focused at http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho , while
old series matters are at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/classic.shtml . Trailers started
to air on BBC One and Two - the trailers are also on the website,
along with a web interview with Murray Gold on the reasoning behind
the new music. Radio Two's Doctor Who mini-site
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/doctorwho launched. It includes a
documentary on the history of the theme tune and will update with
details on Doctor Who related events during the month. Russell T.
Davies, Christopher Eccleston, and Billie Piper started to appear on
various TV and radio shows. Of note was BBC One's 6PM news and BBC
Wales Today at 6:30PM, which had clips from Rose and highlighted
the upcoming series. CBC TV http://www.cbc.ca/television issued a
press release backing up the April 5 at 8PM premiere date for the
series in Canada and added their own Doctor Who homepage
http://www.cbc.ca/doctorwho .
Today (9 March) has seen interviews with Christopher Eccleston and
Billie Piper on BBC Breakfast
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/breakfast and extensive press
discussion. Interview schedules and special programming over the
next few weeks have been popping up, and I have included everything
I know of in the New Series section below. It is certain that more
interview events will pop up after the column goes to press. I'll be
reserving TWIDW mailing list updates for actual programmes focused
on Doctor Who instead of interviews.
The only thing that hasn't happened in the past week is that no
additional broadcasters have been announced as airing the show.
Hopefully that situation will change soon. For now, great happiness
in the UK and Canada as the premiere rapidly approaches, and
speculation in New Zealand on when Prime will start the show.
